ENL services look a little different this year at Schmucker Middle School.  We are excited to have a certified teacher, Mrs. Lewis, working with ENL students at Schmucker.  Students at SMS represent twenty-seven different languages ranging from Akan to Urdu.  All ENL students take the WIDA assessment in January to determine their language levels in the areas of listening, reading, writing and speaking.  Services are then determined based on these student results.

Any ENL student with a WIDA language level of 1, 2 or 3 meets with Mrs. Lewis every day to work on listening, reading, writing, and speaking using the National Geographic INSIDE program.  Students with a WIDA language level of 4 meet with Mrs. Lewis twice each week for direct instruction in listening, reading, writing, and speaking also using the National Geographic INSIDE program.

Also, students who tested at levels three and four on the  January, 2015 WIDA ACCESS exam are required to complete two hours of work each week on a computer program called “My Virtual Reading Coach” that focuses on reading skills.   Time is given each week during school to complete nearly all two hours; however, some work may need to be done outside of school. To get to the Mindplay website, click HERE.   Students who tested at a level one or two will continue to use Openbook software.
