Schmucker Student Recognizd for Riley Children’s Hospital Journey

Schmucker Middle School recently surprised eighth-grade student Emily Newcomb and her family with a personalized Riley Children’s Foundation license plate honoring Emily’s medical journey.

Schools that raise more than $5,000 for Riley Children’s Foundation during a school year can personalize a license plate for one of Riley Hospital for Children’s iconic red wagons. The wagon and plate are then placed into circulation at the hospital, while the school and honored family receive commemorative plates.

Emily has received care at Riley throughout her life, including numerous hospital stays, outpatient visits and eight brain surgeries. She has faced hydrocephalus, epilepsy and other medical challenges with the support of her family and medical team.

The presentation was planned as a surprise for Emily and her mother, Amy Newcomb, a P-H-M bus driver who drops students off at Schmucker each morning. Gary, Emily’s father also joined the family for the special moment.

Schmucker previously dedicated Riley wagon license plates to students Hadley Hunsberger and Grayson Brionis.
