Martin Luther King Jr.'s Words Help Students Find Their Own Voice

Found Poetry Billboard

On Monday, January 17, 2022, we as a nation celebrated the the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Over that last few weeks, several of our classes have been working on projects based on Dr. King’s legacy. It’s important to recognize the lasting impact he had on our nation.

Our Social Studies classes used a technique called Found Poetry, which is taking an existing literary work and selecting key words or phrases to create a whole new poem.

For this lesson, students were given copies of Dr. King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech as inspiration to create their own works.

Below are some examples of what our students came up with. The poems are on display in the hallway near our Social Studies classes, head on down to take a look!
