Students pay tribune to Veterans in 2019 Veterans Day Program

An 8th grade student hugs her Veteran family member

Schmucker Middle School has a long tradition of having the 8th grade class organize and lead the school’s annual Veterans Day Program. The Spartan Choir, led by Mrs. Donna Hipsher), Band (led by Mr. Jeff Carnall and Ms. Kristen Hills) and Orchestra (led by Mrs. Dodi Carnall) all perform for the veterans and special guests. Students honor veteran family members, friends or neighbors by recognizing them with flowers. Click to see the photo gallery below.

This year’s special guest speaker was Major Mike Murrell. He talked to students about being grateful for the gift of freedom that’s been given to them by veterans; he encouraged students to look around them and recognize the veterans that are in their lives and that veterans are not just part of the history books. Major Murrell’s awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal w/ 2 bronze oak leaf, Army Achievement Medal w/ bronze oak leaf, Meritorious Unit Award w/ bronze oak leaf, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal w/ 2 campaign stars, Global War on Terrorism Campaign Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon w/ 2 device, NATO Medal, and the Combat Action Badge.

The program concluded with students introducing their veteran and presenting them with a flower. Schmucker Band Director Mr. Jeff Carnall played taps, after a moment of silence, to honor fallen veterans.
