Newbery Medal winning poet and children's author Kwame Alexander, in association with National Public Radio, put out a call for students to write their own "Where I'm From" poem, modeled off the "Where I'm From" poem by Appalachian poet George Ella Lyon.
Schmucker Middle School students responded by writing their own poems. We combined them all into one poem that we are calling "Where We are From." Then students had the awesome opportunity to meet Kwame when he came to the South Bend area for a speaking appearance.
The SMS students were rewarded at the end of the week with a chance to see Kwame perform while each student received their very own book signed by Alexander. Take a look …
